CONEJO
VALLEY AUDUBON SOCIETY'S 40th
ANNIVERSARY
CHRYSTAL KLABUNDE
(PROGRAM CHAIRPERSON)
Since the
Conejo Valley Audubon Society (CVAS) was founded in 1968, we chose
our September general meeting to throw a 40th anniversary party for
ourselves. In addition to our
usual September practice of sharing member vacation photos,
we had a lovely cake, viewed a slideshow of CVAS scrapbook pictures
and reminisced
about the old days with a few past presidents who visited for
the occasion.
Over these four decades CVAS members have enjoyed many, many
happy hours birding together in locations both near and far
and we’ve
avidly participated in annual Christmas Bird Counts, Backyard
Bird Counts and Big Sits.
We’ve encouraged the public to support us through our Annual
Dinner/Auction, garage sales etc. But we’ve also given
back to our community by providing memorial Dr. H. Elliot
McClure Awards to budding scientists at the
Ventura County Science Fair.
We’ve
shared a booth at the Ventura County Fair with Ventura Audubon
Society each summer and manned informational tables at such
environmental events
as National Geographic’s Bioblitz, Patagonia’s
Salmon Run and many an Earthday celebration. We have staged
events for public
outreach such as our Nature Adventure Day at Camarillo Regional
Park and Kids’ Nature Adventure at the Chumash Cultural
Center in Thousand Oaks. We provide Audubon Adventures kits
to schools
throughout
the area and even participate with education in a very hands-on
way.
CVAS is a healthy and growing Audubon Chapter, and we know
it will continue to do great things for many decades to come.
